Hughesville locals

If you like to be outside, there are two special events coming up this weekend in the eastern end of the county. On Saturday afternoon the East Lycoming Historical Society will honor those Civil War veterans who are buried in the St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery at Gordner’s Grove near Unityville. This commemoration is one of a series the society has planned in observance of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War that so devastated our nation. One cemetery has been chosen from each of the eastern Lycoming County townships.

On a lighter side, the Unityville Fire Company is holding a Pumpkin festival on Saturday and Sunday. There will be much more than pumpkins, however they will feature antiques and crafts displays and vendors, plus apple dumplings, apple butter, baked goods, and many other food items.

Also taking place outdoors is this weekend’s Heritage Festival in Sonestown. The leaves should be gorgeous as you drive north on 220 for a fun day.

The Hughesville Area Public Library (HAPL) has two events coming up. This Friday is the monthly Pre-school Story Hour. Please be sure you have registered your child by calling 584-3762. Mrs. Susan Murray will read stories and help the children with an autumn craft to take home. Next Tuesday evening Mr. Wes Egli will present a program on feeding wild birds. He will talk about how to make your yard one of the favorite bird-feeding stations throughout the winter. Please call HAPL to let them know you are coming so there will be seating for everyone.

Two things are worth adding to your calendar for the end of this month: On Thursday, October 25, the Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department will host a Flu Shot Clinic. Be sure to protect yourself and your family from the dangers of influenza and get your flu shots before winter arrives. After getting “shot”, indulge in some fun at the Lairdsville Volunteer Fire Company’s two-day cake decorating contest which culminates in your chance to win one of the fantastic creations. Nothing beats that “spoonful of sugar” to “help the medicine go down”!
