Hughesville locals

By Staff | Jan 8, 2013

My wish for some snow to brighten up the landscape was granted, at least for the beginning of this new year, but I’m afraid that this weekend’s predicted moderate temperatures and rain will make a rather sloppy mess of the snow. I hope there are no problems that arise. I hope we don’t get any extended periods of what I not-so-fondly refer to as the “bleak, dreary doldrums”! As long as the sun shines for at least a part of the day, I can handle the chilly temps .

January, with all its changeability, is a time for change and improvement. The East Lycoming Historical Society encourages everyone to join them in their effort to collect and preserve items and stories of local historical significance. While the membership year runs from January 1 through December 31, you may join at any time. Annual membership fees are available for youth under age 18, for individual adults, and for a family membership. A contribution of fifty dollars or more will gain the status of “benefactor” and life memberships. Your request for membership and your check for the appropriate amount can be sent to the East Lycoming Historical Society at 66 South Main Street, Hughesville, PA 17737. Ms. Judy Egly, West Academy Street, Hughesville, the society treasurer can also receive your membership request. The next regular meeting and program will be held on Monday, February 18. Watch for more details about that evening’s program.

Representative Garth Everett has announced a town meeting at which area residents are encouraged to meet with him. This is a great opportunity to get first-hand information about the workings of our state government and a chance to ask questions directly to our representative. This meeting will be held on Thursday, January 31 at the Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department social hall on South Railroad Street in Hughesville. I’m sure he will appreciate having lots of people attend with their lists of questions and suggestions!

There is still time to register your pre-school child (ages 3 to 5) for the January Story Hour at the Hughesville Area Public Library. This fun event will be held on Friday, January 11. The library staff would like you to pre-register so they have enough material on hand for the craft session, so be sure to call them at 584-3762.

Have a great week and stay safe and warm!
