This month is a good time to support all the local church fundraisers. There is Shrove Tuesday coming up on February 12 right before Lent which starts the following day on Ash Wednesday, so fill up now on all those goodies! The Pennsdale United Methodist church will be having a pancake dinner. Tonight the First United Methodist Church in Muncy is having a turkey dinner. The Resurrection Church in Muncy is selling pierogies, Bethany United Methodist Church in Hughesville is making homemade raisin filled cookies and the Picture Rocks Baptist Church is selling hand dipped chocolate pretzels. Hughesville Trinity Church is selling fausnaughts.

Needless to say, I have indulged in all of these and noticed a somewhat larger waistline. I call it my winter fat. But all this food is for a good cause, and I did freeze some of the cookies, and I will be giving away some of the chocolate pretzels as Valentine gifts.

Many of our local churches are having bake sales, soup sales, and all you can eat breakfasts. One couple my husband and I met, said that they go out every day or evening to go to a church meal because neither of them like to cook and generally the food is always good. Also getting out to these wonderful meals this time of year keeps us within a social network, so we don’t suffer from ‘cabin fever.’ And, thank goodness, the days are starting to get noticeably longer which prompts me to start looking through those seed catalogs.

Winter Journaling, Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Montour Preserve from 10-11:30 a.m. Presented by Jon D. Beam, Senior Naturalist. Keeping track of nature is something to do all year long, even in winter when nature is pared down to its bare bones. Starting with a brief discussion about nature journaling and observation, participants will go outdoors to make some observations. Dress for weather and time outdoors. Bring a notebook and pen or pencil or a camera to record your observations.

Pre-School Story Time-February 13-March 6-Wednesday mornings from 10:45am-11:15am. For ages 4 to 6. Sign up for the whole 4 week session. Pre-schoolers will be read stories, enjoy movement activities and songs, and make a craft.
