Hughesville locals
If you haven’t seen the flowering trees lining Main Street in the business district, take a few minutes to walk or drive between Walnut and Academy Streets. The trees that were planted as part of the upgrade to the sidewalks and lighting are really growing and becoming a notable feature. We can hope that some of the currently empty business locations will find occupants that will help bring even more patrons to this appealing downtown area.
We all enjoy the events sponsored by the Greater Hughesville Business Association (GHBA), such as the Halloween and Christmas parades, children’s Christmas party at the HVFD Fire Hall and the annual “5 to Drive” event. The 15th Annual GHBA Golf Tournament will take place on Wednesday, May 8 at the Mill Race Golf Course in Benton. This event generates much of the funding needed to make these events possible, plus provides funds for an annual Hughesville High School scholarship, so community support is vital. Those interested in participating in this fun fundraiser should complete their entry forms by April 30, and arrive at 11:30 a.m. on tournament day. You may contact Ed Rogers or Kyle Daugherty (584-2775) with questions
This week one of our local businesses, D & K Studio of Dance, Piano, and Fitness, paid homage to Shannon Bitler, a young woman who had been a student and assistant instructor of dance for 14 years before succumbing to injuries sustained in a car accident last April. Duane and Kellie Gordner have been tireless in their efforts to assist Shannon and her family over the past year, by visiting, assisting with physical therapy, and organizing fundraisers to help defray the many non-medical expenses of travel for Shannon’s family. Shannon was a great favorite with everyone young and old, and will always be remembered.
Be sure to watch for bicyclists, joggers, walkers, children, and motorcyclists as you travel around our beautiful valley!
