Hughesville locals
If the weather were controlled by majority vote, this past weekend would be repeated many times! What a glorious ending of April, a month that often has extremes of hot and cold. With the gradual warming of the soil and the recent rain, I hope that May will be the start to a bountiful gardening season, although I always anticipate the danger of a late frost before Memorial Day! Area gardeners will have covers ready to protect those tender young plants.
The school year is entering its final weeks, and students are checking off many final requirements. Upper grades will be taking Keystone and AP exams, and younger classes will have projects, reports, and final exam preparation. Hughesville High School will celebrate the accomplishments of students in the Fine Arts during the coming week. The annual HHS Spartan Spectacular, featuring the Spartan Band, will take place on Friday night, and the Spring Arts Festival is next Wednesday and Thursday. Art work from students in grades K through 12, computer projects, and music performance will be featured. The junior and senior high choruses will perform on Wednesday, and elementary choruses on Thursday.
Hughesville Rotary Club members were delighted with the response to their E-cycle event. The final tally showed that 64,000 pounds of electronic items were collected. The recycling firm estimates that only about 2% of the total will end up in the landfill. The rest will be sorted and disassembled so that the various materials can be recycled into new products. What a great service by this civic group! They plan to hold this type of collection event again, although dates have not been set.
Although I was disappointed to find overcast skies on the night when Saturn was at its closest proximity to Earth, we can all enjoy seeing it for the next few weeks as one of the brightest “stars” in the sky. Look overhead for this beautiful planet reflecting the sun’s light from 800,000,000 miles away!
