Hughesville locals
There are a lot of things that make me “wonder”. I wonder at the intensity of the green in the newly opened leaves on trees, shrubs and grass; I wonder at the marvels of the night sky, when every hour seems to disclose a new arrangement of constellations and planets; and I wonder at the fact that after spending so much time accumulating “wisdom”, I now am having trouble keeping those facts and fun items of trivia straight! Just last week I mentioned that I would expect to see our last frost around the time of the full moon. Of course, after that was published I remembered that it is the NEW moon, not the full, that I need to be aware of, at least according to an old gardening friend whose judgment I trust. Now I wonder how many other “facts” I’m likely to scramble. Hmmm.
One fact about which I am confident is that if there are frogs living in a backyard pond, they will quickly attract slithering reptilian predators. While I am happy to do what I can to provide a nice natural habitat for some wildlife, I have a hard time welcoming snakes to my patio. So now the frogs have become unwelcome, too, and I will have to be content with an occasional glimpse of a goldfish, as well as the goldfinches that like the thistle feeders.
There are so many social and educational events that are made possible by the untiring efforts of many citizens in our community. The Hughesville Football Boosters, a group which provides much support for the high school program, is hosting a Spaghetti and Meatball Dinner on Saturday, May 18 at the Picture Rocks Fire Hall. Enjoy a meal and conversation with friends and family while you help support this group’s efforts.
If you like to sing, and enjoy participating in the Memorial Day observance at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, you are invited to attend one or more of the Hughesville Civic Chorus rehearsals for this event. Held at the Hughesville Area Public Library community room, these short rehearsals are scheduled for May 13, 20, and 21.
Hughesville Library will hold its monthly Pre-school Story Hour on Friday, May 10 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Be sure to register your 3 to 5 year old child by visiting the library or calling 584-3762. This is a popular event, featuring stories, crafts, and activities. Visit the library to see all the things that are going on, and what’s new to read, listen to, or watch.
