Hughesville locals
Summer has certainly made a dramatic entrance, a few weeks ahead of the solstice. There can’t be any doubt about whether the soil has warmed up for gardening, or whether our air conditioners need to be put in service. I think everyone who has invested in pools and central air will be very happy with those items over the next few months.
With the first week of June, local residents are enjoying the last week of the school year and the annual Firemen’s carnival. If students aren’t studying for final exams, they are probably enjoying the rides, food, music, and games. Of course the great parades through town help to draw us all to the carnival. Former Hughesville residents (and HVFD member) Harry and Peggy Kellogg traveled from Massachusetts to visit friends in town and particularly chose this week so they could attend the carnival. Be sure to watch for them they’ll have big smiles on their faces!
Some others who will be smiling broadly are the nearly 120 young men and women who will receive diplomas from HHS on Friday. There are so many who are sure to accomplish wonderful things in the next few years! Our very best wishes to all graduates. We look forward to hearing about their achievements.
If you are a parent with children of school age, you may be wondering how to help them stay occupied and interested during the long vacation. Hughesville Area Public Library is ready to register students in grades K through 12 for this year’s Summer Reading. There are different activities and events for elementary, junior high, and senior high youth, and prizes and other incentives all summer long. Visit the library at 146 South 5th Street, or call 584-3762 for more information and to pick up a calendar of events and reading log. Students don’t have to worry there are no tests! (Although there may be a few challenging trivia quizzes!) This year’s elementary theme is “Dig Into Reading”, and for teens it it “Beneath the Surface”. Bring a friend and check it out.
Adult readers will enjoy being a part of the Hughesville/Muncy Book Club. The club members are currently reading “Crystal Garden” by Amanda Quick and will discuss it at their June meeting at the Muncy Library on South Main Street in Muncy. In July the club will return to the Hughesville Library and the book selection is “Middle March” by George Eliot. The club meets on the third Saturday at 10 a.m.
This past week of hot weather was rather like a “shake-down cruise” for my house Now I think I have everything ready for keeping cool indoors! Have a great week!
