Summer days after the fair is over are always a great time for just enjoying the hot days and giving thanks for the nights when the temperature drops enough to cool off the house without the aid of air-conditioning. The break in the recent heat wave, when temps “only” reached into the mid-eighties, has done a lot to improve my disposition. I was born in the midst of a January cold snap and have never been a fan of our humid, hot summer weather. I do find, however, that as the years go by, I do look forward to summer to get my bones warmed up before the onset of another winter.
Are you looking for something different to do on a summer day? One place you will enjoy right here in Hughesville is the East Lycoming Historical Society Museum, centrally located on South Main Street in the former Montgomery Pharmacy building. The all-volunteer staff has arranged the space so that it showcases many different eras and historical events from Hughesville and the surrounding “East Lycoming” area. It is a place well worth visiting, and will give your out-of-town visitors a great look at our community. The folks on duty can also give you the low-down on many events that have taken place in Hughesville over the last 150+ years. Currently the hours are 12 to 3 on Saturday and Sunday.
Another local gem is the Hughesville Area Public Library. Statistics from the Lycoming County Library System show that over 50% of residents of Hughesville, Picture Rocks, and Wolf Township have a library card. Of course the staff would love to see that number be even larger! If you haven’t visited the library lately, make it a point to stop by and see all that is offered. The staff is always adding new books, DVDs, and magazines to the shelves, and there are public access computers, free Wi-Fi, a fax machine, photocopier, and a congenial atmosphere available to you. Library hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, 10 to 5 on Friday and Saturday.
Whatever type of outdoor activity you engage in, please remember to use a hat, sunscreen, and stay hydrated! Summer is such a great season, but it is easy to be overcome by the heat and power of the sun.
