Hughesville locals

By Staff | Aug 27, 2013

I can’t count the number of people who have said “I love this weather!” during these last few days. Who could argue with that sentiment? We have such a variable climate with our ranges of temperature and humidity, but Mother Nature has been showing off a little this month. Can we hope that the autumn colors will be spectacular this year?

It will truly seem like autumn has arrived when we all begin to see each other at local sports events, now that the high schools have begun the fall season. I know it will be time to pull out the blankets and assorted items that make it more comfy to sit in the bleachers while enjoying a football or soccer game. I’m wishing the best for all the student athletes. Go Spartans!

Labor Day weekend is here and there’s a wide variety of diversions for everyone. The Sullivan County Fair in Forksville with its many events, rides, food vendors, and slate of entertainment, begins today (Wednesday) and runs through the weekend into Monday, Sept. 2. Sullivan County will also be hosting the 31st annual Labor Day Market on Saturday, August 31 on the Green in Eagles Mere. Both events will be fun, I’m sure, and its always a nice drive up the mountain from Hughesville.

A very special event here in Hughesville is the dinner and silent auction to benefit the Christopher T. Secules Memorial Scholarship. Family and friends of this brilliant and talented young man have established this scholarship to benefit students from Hughesville High School and to perpetuate Chris’s memory. I expect that there will be an “SRO” crowd in Stuempfle Hall at Trinity Lutheran Church this Saturday evening.

Mark your calendar for a great time on Saturday, September 7.

The Annual Hughesville Community Festival will be held at Lime Bluff Park in Wolf Township beginning at 10 a..m. There will be music, craft vendors, a pet parade, live alpacas, a car show, and so much more! HVFD’s new fire truck is expected to be displayed, and Charles Hughes will present, at noon, a history of the W & NB Railroad, especially as it relates to the Lime Bluff park site. Bring the whole family to this wonderful celebration of our great local area.

Best wishes to all our local students. Be watchful for pedestrians and bicyclists when driving, especially when students are going to or from school.
