Hughesville locals
Hughesville has had the blessing of great weather for many of the recent big events in the area. Wasn’t it spectacular to see the planes and parachutists over the high school football stadium on Friday night? The hot-air balloons and air show are such a rare treat. I hope we can have many more events like that in the area.
Many people from all around the area also spent Saturday enjoying the Moreland Township bicentennial celebration and the several events at churches and the ELHS museum, and more than a few said they wished they could be at all the fun things that were on the same day!
Recently we have had some severe storms that resulted in loss of tree limbs and some whole trees, and there have been a few instances of minor building damage, but we have been fortunate that we have not had devastating storms, floods, or wildfires like those suffered by folks in other parts of the country. My husband and I have been in contact, thank goodness, with all our family members who live along the Front Range in Colorado. Some have had little impact from the torrential rain and resulting flash floods, while others have been cut off from returning to their homes to begin the recovery process. It will be a long time before things seem normal for many in that area; many local residents had a similar experience after Tropical Storm Lee just two years ago.
If you are willing to volunteer some time to help the East Lycoming Little League prepare the baseball, softball, and tee-ball fields for winter, they will welcome your help. Three work days are scheduled for the next three Saturdays, at 9 a.m. on September 21 & 28, and October 5. Painting and grounds-keeping work needs to be done so the complex, recognized as one of the best in this part of the state, will be in good condition for next spring.
Do you like to provide food for wild birds through the winter months? The local Audubon Society chapter is again offering high quality bird seed as their main yearly fund-raiser. Check with any Society member for order forms, or with Snyder’s Nursery in Montoursville for more detail. I have had a lot of fun watching the many different species of birds that find their way to my backyard, and they really seem to like the blend I have purchased through this Audubon source.
I hope everyone will get a chance to get outside and enjoy the last days of summer!
