Hughesville locals

By Staff | Oct 25, 2013

We’ve been treated to some ideal fall weather lately and it doesn’t look like Halloween costumes will have to fit over snowsuits this year! Will winter arrive early and prove me wrong?

There are some good things happening in our community and area that you will want to add to your calendar. It will be outdoor dining for a good cause on Sunday, October 27, starting at noon at the East Lycoming Historical Society building, 66 South Main Street, Hughesville. ELHS and Boy Scout Troop 26 will be holding a “burger burn” to raise funds to assist a local family whose head of household is undergoing treatment for throat cancer. This family is active with membership in both ELHS and Troop 26. Come out and help give a true community-wide backing for this worthwhile endeavor.

The coming week will be one of the most exciting times of the year for many in the area, especially the youngsters. Halloween is a real favorite with lots of children and teens who enjoy the fantasy and daring of “becoming” one of their favorite characters from books, TV, movies, or even video games. I have spent many October days and evenings constructing costumes for our children and this year is no exception, although now I have to finish in time to mail things off to college!

I find it sad that the local school district has discontinued the elementary parade and “dress-up” activities associated with Halloween. I agree that we should not promote things that can be disturbing to children, but I think it was always well-handled in past years; our children found it to be among their favorite times of the school year.

As we take a peek at November’s calendar, we find there are lots of opportunities for fellow-shipping at events in the area and Election Day.

Election Day is November 5, although I have to admit that since I have not seen many campaign signs, I assume there are not too many contested positions or issues that will appear on this “off-year” ballot.

Enjoy these lovely autumn days!
