Hughesville Locals Feb. 12, 2014

By Staff | Feb 14, 2014

Wheeee!! The toboggan slide at Eagles Mere is open once again and my husband, son, daughter-in-law, and I were among those who experienced the exhilaration of this winter delight. Despite an hour and a half wait to rent a toboggan, and the snowy conditions, we had a great time!

I love the toboggan ride and try to get there at least once every season when it is open. I had nearly given up hope that the weather would produce the required ice thickness on Eagles Mere Lake and then sustain temperatures low enough to keep the track from melting. The Eagles Mere Volunteer Fire Company does a super job operating the slide and it’s a great fund-raiser, too. Details can be found on the website www.eaglesmere.org.

Congratulations to Katelyn Derby, Lydia Getgen, and Rilynn Temple! Each of these three HHS students performed at PMEA District festivals and qualified by audition to advance to the Regional level! Katelyn Derby, a sophomore, attended District Chorus in Canton and will be singing at Region Chorus this week in Tunkhannock. Senior Lydia Getgen performed at both District Orchestra and District Band and has achieved the rare honor of being picked for both of the Regional festivals for instrumentalists. Rilynn Temple, a junior who is also the band’s Drum Major, placed near the top of her section at District Band in Berwick last week and will go to the Regional Band festival next month.

Are you keeping your bird feeders filled? It’s been a challenge to keep enough birdseed on hand for the wide variety of birds that visit our backyard. I was told that it is a great benefit for the birds if you can have some open water available in addition to the feeders. I keep the pump running to circulate the water all winter and most of the time there has been an unfrozen area the birds can access. It seems to be appreciated.

It’s not too late to see one of the high school athletic teams compete in winter sports, so check the basketball and wrestling schedules and head over to the gym! It’s a great way to spend an evening and the kids will appreciate your support.

Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone!
