Hughesville Locals Feb. 19, 2014
I am hoping that by the time you read this, the snow piles at the end of my driveway will have receded enough that I don’t have to crane my neck to see over them! It has been a long time since we’ve had this much snow on the ground, and most folks are hoping it will be a while before it happens again! Please remember, if there is snow piled up around the fire hydrant near your home, it will delay use of the hydrant by firefighters in an emergency. Take a few minutes and enlist help from your neighbors to make sure the snow is cleared away. It is also helpful for everyone to make sure that pedestrians can get from one place to another without having to scale heaps of snow at the corner or curb.
Congratulations are due to Hughesville High School 9th grade saxophonist Cassie Walters, who was chosen last week to be part of the District Jazz Festival for this school year! This is quite an honor as only about 24 students are selected from across the PMEA (Pennsylvania Music Educators Association) district, which encompasses 39 school districts. The festival will be held in Sayre in April.
Tickets will be on sale soon for “Forty-Second Street”, this year’s HHS musical production! To reserve your tickets for this singing and dancing delight, call the high school office during school hours. All seats are reserved.
Hughesville Area Public Library, along with all libraries in the Lycoming County System, has recently switched to a new catalog and circulation computer system. If you visit the library or the website, you may see some differences, but your current library card will remain active and the librarians hope that only positive changes will be apparent! This is a great time of year to visit the library and stock up on material that will help you plan your garden planting and summer entertaining!
There are many good things being planned for the East Lycoming Historical Society museum for this spring. In addition to the usual bi-monthly meetings, society members are planning a special open house to celebrate the museum and showcase some of the many unique items displayed there. Plan to visit the museum during the Memorial Day weekend in May, and bring your out-of-town visitors in to see Hughesville’s heritage.
I think I have the best-fed squirrels in town. I thought my feeder was placed so that they couldn’t get to the birdseed, but I was wrong. I broke down and bought some food just for them, hoping it will tempt them to let the birds get their share, but the outlook is bleak.
