Hughesville Locals May 28
What a wonderful Memorial Day weekend and holiday! I hope that everyone was able to spend some time outdoors. I think Sunday evening was the perfect weather and I took advantage of it to just enjoy my front porch. I tried to focus on the plants that are in bloom and not on the weeds that need to be pulled.
Several annual events will take place in the next week. Hughesville High School seniors will have their Baccalaureate service on Sunday evening and then commencement on Friday. It’s amazing to see how far have all come. I hope every graduate will find a life path that they enjoy and that they will use their energy and skills to help our community grow and prosper.
Another event in town is the Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department’s annual Carnival. A major fund-raiser for the fire company, the carnival kicks off the summer season with parades, great food, and a chance to see friends and neighbors. Having such a well-trained and well-equipped, dedicated group willing to serve our community is a great benefit to all of us and I hope everyone will visit the carnival and lend much support.
With the summer weather comes the chance to travel just a short distance and enjoy the shops and businesses of the Eagles Mere area or the water, trails, and campgrounds of Worlds End and Ricketts Glen State Parks. The natural air conditioning that one can enjoy is just one of Sullivan County’s attractions. Check out Hughesville’s Main Street businesses, then head north on 220 for a great day in the mountains.
As we all indulge in more outdoor activity, make sure to use a hat and sunscreen, and use caution when driving. There are many motorcyclists and bicyclists sharing the streets. Also, please don’t take young children or pets along in the car if they can’t accompany you into all your destinations.
Just a few minutes in a hot car can be deadly! Let’s all have a safe and fun summer!
