Hughesville Locals June 25

By Staff | Jun 24, 2014

What a fantastic weekend to mark the official beginning of summer! We were in attendance at our niece’s wedding in Chester County. Guests were invited to wear formal attire from the era of your choosing, so there was a fun mix of styles and imagination. The weather was astounding and the setting, on the grounds of the groom’s 19th century farmhouse, made it truly a “picture-perfect”day. I’m so glad to be able to share family times like these. And while we saw a large portion of eastern Pennsylvania, as always, I was glad to be back in the embrace of our local valley, one of the best places I know!

This weekend we will observe the 100th anniversary of the event that began warfare that would involve combatants from all around the globe. Assassination of the Archduke of Austria touched off the greatest conflagration the world had known, and eventually even local residents were personally affected.

Hughesville’s Glenn Sharrow enlisted in September of 1915 and was killed in action on October 3, 1918, at age 21. American Legion Post #35 is named for Corporal Sharrow, who is buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. It is unfortunate that while this was called “the war to end all wars”, human nature proved that conflict is too often used to attempt to resolve disagreement. We can only pray that someday we will find other means to get along!

Now that summer is here, many of us will be using backyard pools, bicycles, and many other outdoor fun equipment. Be sure that everyone in your household knows the safety rules and guidelines and that all your gear is in good working order so that no one is injured or left behind when the fun begins.

It’s also time to get the camping an hiking gear out and enjoy some of the great natural areas that are just a few minutes away. Escape the heat with an outing to World’s End, Ricketts Glen, or Bald Eagle State Parks, or just get wet in Muncy Creek or the Susquehanna.
