Hughesville locals July 9
It’s Fair time! Fireworks will light up the night sky over Hughesville on Thursday (with Friday as the rain date). Be sure to get to the fairgrounds or some other good vantage point so that you can view this always-spectacular show. Last year we were in Hannibal, Missouri on July 4 and watched their fireworks from a spot on the levee along the Mississippi River. While the show lasted for nearly an hour, we all agreed that it was not nearly as good as the one at our Lycoming County Fair!
While my area of the borough doesn’t see much of the increased traffic during fair time, I know that some areas of the southeast quadrant have limited on-street parking, and will have many visitors attempting to find the best entrance to the fairgrounds. We all need to plan for a little extra time to navigate around town and also use extra vigilance in watching for those who may be distracted, or who may make sudden stops or turns. We don’t want anyone’s visit to Hughesville to result in an accident, or for any residents to have problems arise.
If the temperature climbs and the humidity gets high, a trip up the mountain to Eagles Mere may be just what you need! The shops and museum at the town square are great places to visit and the 40th Annual Summer Antiques Market will take place on the Green this Saturday. There are always many vendors and craftsmen who have a wide variety of wonderful items available. Also worth a drive up the mountain are the state parks near Forksville (World’s End) and Red Rock (Ricketts Glen). Pack your swimsuit and towel and take a dip in Loyalsock Creek at World’s End, or in Lake Jean at the top of Red Rock Mountain.
Many local churches have adjusted their worship service schedules to earlier, cooler hours. Bethany and Christ Methodist Churches are holding joint worship services during the summer months. Please check with the church offices to make sure you will arrive at the right time!
Sue Wommer was in town for the week of 4th to visit her family Dave Wommer and Al Wommer, brothers and stayed with girlfriend Carolyn Keller. She stopped in Luminary office to say hello!
