Hughesville Locals Aug. 6

By Staff | Aug 8, 2014

Grilled eggplant, stuffed zucchini, and the aroma of pickling spices — can you tell that it’s been a good year to have a vegetable garden? Mercifully, our zucchini plants overextended themselves and gave up, but not before producing an abundant crop. We’ve found several tasty recipes and I stocked the pantry shelves with breads baked in wide mouth jars so that no defrosting is needed whenever we want to enjoy some tastes of summer. Now it looks like that time of the season when I have to try to keep up with the tomatoes!

Have you heard the sound of the HHS Spartan Marching Band? They began their annual two-week ?camp? a bit earlier than usual and will be ready to represent Hughesville in the Little Little League World Series ?Grand Slam? parade and then perform their football game show once school starts. I always love to see the new show that they develop, and it’s fun to watch the kids enjoy themselves while they perform.

We can all hope for clear skies for the middle of next week. The annual Perseid meteor shower, named for the constellation Perseus, from which they seem to originate will peak on the night of August 12, but night sky watchers from now through the end of next week will be likely to spot meteors if there is not a solid cloud cover. One thing that will impede some views of these ?shooting stars? will be the presence of the full moon, which is actually a ?Super Moon? this month. At full moon stage, it will appear to be 30% brighter than usual, due to it being slightly closer to earth in its orbit. Take a chair or mat outdoors in a dark spot and enjoy this annual celestial event!

During these last few weeks of summer vacation we all need to be aware of bicyclists and walkers whenever we are driving around town. We want to make sure that everyone is well and healthy to start off the school year.
