Hughesville Locals Oct. 8
Watching network news programs, checking news sites online, and reading the local newspaper can be rather depressing at times, what with wars and rumors of wars, stories of people treating each other in despicable ways, and the threat of biological hazards. It often reminds me of how glad I am to live here in this relatively quiet place. While modern communication can connect us with the rest of the world almost instantaneously, we still are a bit buffered by distance and by the surrounding hills. As you drive north on 405 approaching Hughesville, take a moment to look at the many hills that encircle our valley. I always think of these hills as an embrace, a cushion from the rest of the world. Also, the fall foliage colors are beginning to brighten and will soon be at their peak.
Sharp observers of the sky will have seen this year’s second full lunar eclipse this morning ( Wednesday). The complete eclipse cycle ended after the moon had set after sunrise. A year from now we’ll have a much better chance to see this intriguing celestial event. Mark your new calendar for September 28, 2015 when we will be in the area of totality and the eclipse will occur around 9 p.m.
Another uncommon event to watch for is the partial eclipse of the sun on Thursday, October 23. We won’t be able to view the entire event, since it will begin just before local sunset, but I’ll still try to see as much as possible. Of course, we have to be cautious when attempting to view solar eclipses, and use an indirect method or specially produced protective viewers. Looking at the sun can permanently damage eyes, so be sure to protect your vision.
In the more immediate future, watch for the HHS Homecoming Parade and football game on Friday, October 17. Cross your fingers for good weather! It’s nice to see the students put forth their best efforts, and great to see classmates from years gone by. HHS graduates should plan to attend and see how the traditions continue and how new ideas have updated the experience.
Enjoy these crisp autumn days!
