Hughesville Locals Dec. 10
Early sunsets this time of year can make us feel gloomy, especially on those days when the clouds gather and cold rain falls. But this time of year also has the benefit of lights and music that are sure to raise the spirits! The past weekend was a music-filled one for me, and I hope you have an opportunity to enjoy some of the great music events that are still to come.
The first of three great musical events I attended was the Lycoming County Senior High Honors Band. The concert included music from many eras and of varied degrees of complexity. The stage at HHS auditorium showcased 98 musicians from the high schools of Lycoming County, with guest conductor Mr. Bill Powers of Landisville, PA. While the audience was appreciative of all the numbers performed, I noticed an increase in head nodding and body movement when the band played “The Beatles Remembered”! It was obvious that most people recognized the tunes.
Muhlenberg College in Allentown annually presents “Candlelight Carols” complete with choral and instrumental performing groups and soloists, as well as liturgical dance performance, interspersed with Biblical readings. We were in attendance for the Saturday evening presentation, a wonderful way to lift the spirits and usher in the Christmas season. Locally, Lycoming College has a similar candlelight service.
The weekend’s third music event was the first of two concerts by the West Branch Chorale. You have an opportunity to hear this talented group next Sunday and I urge you not to miss it! The singers, their director, and their accompanist present a marvelous performance.
Congratulations to all the winners in this year’s GHBA “5 to Drive” merchant’s give-away! The sun came out to welcome Santa in the parade on Sunday and Hughesville has truly dressed up for the holiday. Be sure to spend some of your shopping time on Main Street in Hughesville.
