Hughesville Locals May 20, 2015
What a wonderful week it’s been! Near perfect weather, with just enough precipitation, has combined with parties and celebrations as students of all ages wrap up another school year. I can’t remember when I last had my garden ready to plant this early! Usually I am happy to get things done before the first of June. I am a bit leery of a late frost, though, so I’ll be keeping a “weather eye” out as the next ten days unfold. Memorial Day is usually a good benchmark for me to get my planting done, although it is early this year.
Have you visited our local state parks or wildlife areas recently? I am so grateful that we have so many choices available and can enjoy our Pennsylvania Wilds after only a short car ride. If you have any interest in what programs or guided hikes are taking place, you can call the office at any of the state parks. Of course many of the parks have campgrounds or cabins for overnight stays, but even a day-long outing can feel like a mini-vacation.
It will soon be time for our local volunteer fire company to hold their annual carnival fund-raiser starting June 1st. Be sure to attend and support the wonderful service these dedicated individuals provide for our community. If you like to bake, stock up on supplies and donate cakes or pies for the games of chance or food stands. Your efforts will be greatly appreciated.
Singers are needed for the final East Lycoming Historical Society Civil War commemoration coming up on June 15. Music has been presented in past years at the society’s events at several cemeteries in the area where there are graves of Civil War veterans. If you like to sing, practices have begun for a couple of simple songs. Attendance is suggested for at least one or two of the rehearsals which are being held at the Hughesville Area Public Library, 146 South Fifth Street. Call the library at (570)584-3762 for details.
Have a happy and safe Memorial Day weekend. Let’s have American flags displayed at every home in Hughesville!
