Hughesville Locals May 27, 2015

By Staff | May 27, 2015

It seems odd to have an entire week left in May after Memorial Day, doesn’t it? I am enjoying the thought that this gives us another weekend to enjoy with friends and family. I’ll be doing some backpacking as several of us tackle the Old Loggers’ Path in northern Lycoming County. I’ve recently realized that while I have had opportunities to visit many places in the world, there are still places right here in our home county that are new to me. I plan to rectify that neglect by visiting some of these backyard gems this summer.

One of the busier weeks of the season is coming next week. The HHS seniors will be honored at commencement on Friday, June 5, and the local elementary six grade graduations and awards assemblies will take place throughout the week. With the Hughesville Fireman’s Carnival every evening and parades on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday, I don’t think anyone can complain that “there’s nothing to do!”

Speaking of the carnival, I hope everyone will attend at least once and support the vital service these dedicated individuals provide for our community. If you like to bake, the firemen will be grateful for your donations of cakes or pies for the games of chance or food stands. Many small contributions will result in large possibilities for the department.

The East Lycoming Historical Society will hold its final Civil War commemoration at a picnic meeting on June 15. Singers are needed for this event. If you like to sing, practices have begun for a couple of simple songs to be present in four-part harmony. Attendance is suggested for at least one or two of the rehearsals which are being held at the Hughesville Area Public Library, 146 South Fifth Street. Call the library at (570)584-3762 for details.

Sat. June 6, 5 p.m. HVFD Fireman’s Parade. Horns and sirens will delight young and old alike (except for my dog, who’s afraid of most loud things).
