Hughesville Locals Jan. 13, 2016

By Staff | Jan 15, 2016

It has been typical January weather hasn’t it? First, we get the deep freeze, and then we have to look out for flooding in low-lying areas, or for wind-driven branches to block roads and walkways. I hope we manage to avoid the worst types of blizzards or flooding. I can deal with most of what winter dishes out, but we do not need to have anyone in danger of loss of life or belongings.

Congratulations to Hughesville resident Tammy S. Ryder, a technology management student at Penn College, who was part of a four-member team that was ranked in the top half of the Global Top 100 for its overall score in the Business Strategy Game, an international business-simulation competition. The Business Strategy Game is used not only in undergraduate capstone classes, but also in graduate classes and as a corporate-level training tool. The challenge is to create a “virtual reality” business and then craft and execute a competitive strategy that results in a respected brand image, keeps the company in contention for global market leadership, and produces good financial performance. Tammy and her teammates were ranked each week in four categories: overall game-to-date score, earnings per share, return on average equity and stock price. They worked on this project throughout the fall semester, competing against thousands of teams worldwide.

Hughesville Area Public Library has begun holding movie nights featuring films that will appeal to a wide range of patrons. This Saturday’s film is “The Searchers,” starring John Wayne. There is a limited amount of seating, so please register for this free event by visiting HAPL or calling (570)584-3762.

Teens will want to register for the library’s Teen Video Game night that will take place on Sunday, January 17 from 6-10 PM. This is a great way to try out a variety of games while enjoying the company of other game enthusiasts!

Have you seen the great basketball that is happening at HHS? Both the Boys’ and Girls’ Varsity teams are posting wins against tough competitors and those in attendance are having a great time watching these outstanding student-athletes. Check the schedule and be sure to head over to the gym and enjoy some games. You’ll have a good time, I’m sure.

I hope everyone has a great week. Be sure to keep an eye on the weather forecast and be prepared for whatever may be coming our way!
