Muncy locals Jan. 13, 2016

By Staff | Jan 15, 2016

This is the week of the annual farm show in Harrisburg. It will end Saturday and I commend the 4-H’ers and all the hard work they put into the show each year. Congratulations Stacy Hart for winning the cake contest!

Also congratulations to Maggie Baker, a Muncy native who received an award through the Pennsylvania Criminal Intelligence Center. Maggie is an Intelligence Analyst with the PA State Police and she received the Excellence in the Field of Fusion Center Outreach Award. She currently works in the Critical Infrastructure/Key Resources protection unit withing the PaCIC.

Nationally speaking, the topic of gun violence has become a “loaded issue” and a sensitive subject with pros and cons on safety and regulation. I have decided to put a poll on the Luminary website to see how strongly readers feel about this compelling, controversial topic. The Pennsylvania Medical Society reported that it recognizes gun violence as a “public health problem.” Therefore, we should be well aware of the risks of handling guns. Because of this and the rising numbers of filed applications for ownership, our local legislators along with the county’s district attorney are holding seminars to learn more about the exact laws and rules for carrying a firearm. Most importantly, they want existing owners to know how to interact safely with a public officer who is also carrying a gun.

My husband and I went to see Star Wars at the Lycoming Mall and thoroughly enjoyed all the action. The word is out that there will be another film made soon. Even in that movie, there was a lot of gun violence, but I was glad that the strong protagonist and leading character was a young female, and actress Carrie Fisher went from portraying Princess Leia to becoming General Leia Organa. Maybe that’s a sign for good things to come.
