Montgomery Locals Mar. 2, 2016
March has arrived, so I would like to take this opportunity to wish Montgomery a Happy Birthday. The town was incorporated in March of 1887, which marks the town’s 129th year. At a time like this, Montgomery’s official slogan comes to mind: ‘Growing Toward Tomorrow.’
I’m glad to see the positive changes Montgomery has made in the past few years such as the revitalization of the downtown business district, honoring our servicemen with banners on Main Street and Montgomery Street, the opening of the historical society, and the gorgeous renovation of the Montgomery Area Public Library.
At the same time, I can’t help but feel nostalgic for the Montgomery of my childhood. I miss the days when frequent trains came through town, complete with cabooses that carried friendly railroad men who waved to children. I also miss the days of buying penny candy at Dick’s Newsstand.
One thing hasn’t changed and I hope it never will: we don’t have traffic lights. To me, it’s a quintessential sign of small town America.
As the old saying goes, time marches on. May Montgomery’s 129th year be one of our best!
