Muncy Locals Mar. 9, 2016
Incredibly, it’s almost Easter time. This Saturday all the Easter egg hunts will be held. Each community hosts spectacular hunts for children, families and grandkids. The Easter bunny will be stopping at the Skilled Nursing Unit in Muncy at 2 p.m. He will also be at Bodine Park in Hughesville in the morning and he is supposed to be at the YMCA too.
This has also been an important month for history as we continue our search for important women to note Women’s History Month. Also we are doing much research to help celebrate the Luminary’s 175th Anniversary in April. I am doing some history on the first hospital in Muncy and found some history of Muncy’s schools in Luminary archives. Which reminds me, these archives are at your disposal for dates and family histories. The Muncy Library has copies and we have some in our office. The last decade of the newspapers are digital but prior to that we have hard copies. 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of WWI and Carol Shetler has been doing much research on local soldiers and military personnel from that time period.
Congratulations to Angelo Barberio for making it to the state wrestling tournament in Hershey over the weekend. This was his third time there and the first time he has placed in his division.
I also read that some Muncy students in environmental studies removed some dangerous trees surrounding the school’s football field. New trees were then selected from Eric Mitcheltree’s class and tips from arborist Bernie Dincher. The students spent about a week or so doing research on the soil conditions and what type of trees would grow best there. They decided on Eastern Red Cedar, Douglas Fir and Pin Oak, the latter of which should grow at a rate of 24 inches per year and up to 70 feet. It will be neat to watch them grow, but first they said the school board has to give them the Ok!
