Hughesville Locals May 4, 2016
I guess by now everyone knows that today, Wednesday, is “Star Wars Day” — “May the Fourth be with you”. . . Ah, yes, I am a bit of a nerd, having raised several fans of the galaxy-hopping set of movies. And have I told you that my dining room wall sports a map of Tolkien’s Middle Earth? My granddaughter is still trying to understand why we have a map of a place that doesn’t really exist. I tell her that she will comprehend the matter in time.
The welcome wet weather has eased the fears of brush fires and encouraged rapid growth of the grass in our yard. My husband has already spent more time mowing this year than he spent shoveling snow all winter, but I know that despite his mild complaints, he would much rather mow grass than wrestle with a snow shovel. I don’t think he’s alone in that sentiment.
I was fortunate to have an opportunity to see many photos of HHS students who attended the Prom last weekend, and it’s wonderful to see how exquisite they all looked, and to know they had a great time together. It’s nice, too, that the weather was only cloudy, not wet for the event.
This week we have several events that will benefit our local school district students. Saturday is a very busy day at the high school, spilling over into the parking areas around Ashkar Elementary school. Enjoy your week!
Hughesville Events:
Fri. and Sat. May 6 & 7, 8 -3, annual plant sale at the HHS greenhouse, 349 Cemetery Street. The high school botany classes and students in the LCTC program have an assortment of bedding and garden plants at competitive prices. It’s time to get your garden and yard spruced up for summer, so stock up on these locally produced plants.
Sat. May 7, 9 a.m. to 12 noon, the East Lycoming Education Foundation’s Third Annual Carz and More show, which will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. in the Hughesville High School Parking lot. Last year, over 125 vehicles participated and even more are expected this year. For additional details, please email mpawlik@elsd.org. This is also a fund-raiser for the ELEF scholarship. There will be a wide variety of vehicles on display, as well as vendors, games, and food, so be sure to put on a hat and sunscreen and head out to the HHS/Ashkar Elementary School parking lot.
Sat. May 7, 9:30 a.m. is the Joe Young 5K Memorial Race. Participants may run or walk the 5K distance on the HHS track. Registration fees support the scholarship fund, which was established after the tragic death of Joe Young, an HHS student and athlete. Kids under 12 can participate free.
Sat. May 14 Boy Scout Outdoor Expo at Lime Bluff Park, 9 to 4. Plenty to see with exhibits and food available from the Picture Rocks Lions Club. Lots of information and handouts. Open to the public.
Sat. May 21, 2 p.m. Lego builders’ club kick-off at Hughesville Area Public Library, 146 South Fifth Street. For more information about this new program, please visit or call the library at (570)584-3762.
