Annual visit to Alvira site will take place May 28

By Staff | May 11, 2016

MONTGOMERY – The Montgomery Area Historical Society will be hosting an open house in the Stone Church in Alvira on Saturday, May 28 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Maps will be available to help in locating graves in the cemeteries, and there will be displays about some of the former town’s buildings. A documentary will be shown as well.

Alvira was a village that was situated around the area that is now the game lands. In 1942, the federal government took the entire town and the surrounding lands by eminent domain to create a TNT plant. The Stone Church is the only surviving Alvira building and is now on the property of the Allenwood prison. If you are intrigued by local history or World War II, don’t miss this rare opportunity to see the Stone Church. There is no charge to attend the event.
