Muncy Locals June 8, 2016

By Staff | Jun 9, 2016

Congratulations to Cameron Good of Muncy, a recipient of the Comcast Foundation’s Leaders and Achievers Scholarship program. He was recognized at a special event at the State Museum in Harrisburg for his academic achievement and community service. Cameron was also the Valedictorian of Muncy’s 2016 graduating class.

The R.J. Patrizio Muncy Community Pool opened for the season on Saturday with cloudy skies and some rain. This Saturday, depending on weather, will be a free swim day as it will be the first community day of the season and sponsored by the First Community Foundation. The Muncy Professional Business Association will also be sponsoring one this summer. Children under 2 can always get in free and admission is only half if you come after 5 p.m. during the regular season. The pool opens at 1 p.m. and closes at 7 p.m. Family memberships are also available.

We attended the roast turkey dinner always held the first Saturday in June at the Huntersville United Methodist Church on Saturday. It is a small charming church and this is a big fundraiser for them. You have to wait inside the church itself until your number is called to go into the social hall for a family style dinner. It is a long wait but worth it. Church volunteers said they served over 300 dinners and cooked 14 turkeys in their homes, as well as homemade pies and cakes. No one got to leave hungry!

This Tuesday, June 14 is Flag Day. This is also a good time to display the state flag with the American flag at the top. In 1778 the first Coat of Arms for Pennsylvania was made in Philadelphia and consisted of a shield, an American Bald Eagle for the crest, two harnessed black horses as supporters, and the state’s motto, “Virtue, Liberty and Independence.” Some modifications were made to it since then, but the design originally made by Caleb Lownes, remains in use today. Our state flag was officially authorized on June 13, 1907.
