Hughesville Locals July 20, 2016

By Staff | Jul 21, 2016

Fair week in Hughesville is a great time for catching up with friends as you view the exhibits or attend one of the shows at the grandstand. The high temperatures this year have made it difficult for everyone, including the many animals that are part of the agricultural displays and competitions, but it is still a great event and a grand tradition. If you haven’t visited the Lycoming County Fair yet, there are still a couple of days for you to enjoy the midway, see a show, ride, play games, view the winning entries, or eat your favorite indulgences!

I’m sure you have heard about Pokemon GO! It is nice that this game, unlike so many others, requires players to actually get outside and move from place to place to “capture” characters and rewards. It appears to be very compelling, and some players have been observed walking or biking while paying more attention to their cell phones than to their surroundings or traffic. Please be watchful when you drive through town. Those who are playing are not intending any harm, and those I’ve seen have been well behaved and quiet. Who knows, having more people outside on foot might actually deter some who might have criminal intent.

Last week I was beginning to be concerned about the dry state of our yard and garden, but then on Saturday Mother Nature showed that she had things under control and brought over an inch of rainfall in a couple of thunderstorms. While we are still in the midst of a dry spell and drought is a definite possibility, the storm will help our yards, gardens, and crops to flourish for a while longer without the need for irrigation.

If you find that the hot weather makes you want to stay indoors, visit the Hughesville Area Public Library and pick up some great books, magazines, or movies to pass the time. The library is a cool, comfortable place with free Wi-Fi and public access computers, so you can take care of all your electronic tasks, too. Summer Reading and special programs continue for all ages, so check with their schedule and mark your calendar for the times that work for you.
