Hughesville Locals Aug. 24, 2016

By Staff | Aug 23, 2016

I will try not to say too much about how quickly the summer has gone. While I know I have had lots of pool time, a few camping trips, and a lovely week in Europe, it seems that it has only been a short while since Memorial Day weekend. I hope we have a long, mild autumn that will allow me to do more of the outdoor activities that I enjoy. I don’t have a lot of ambition for biking or hiking when the thermometer is showing temps in the 80s and 90s.

School begins this week for most students in our area and high school athletic contests are filling up our calendars. The Hughesville High School Varsity Football team is kicking off their season with a home game that will feature activities and special events to honor our American military, both active duty and veterans. Admission to the game will be free for both groups, and there will be many things going on at the stadium that will honor our service men and women. What a great way for our students to start their school year and football season!

Other HHS teams are getting ready for their competitive seasons, also. Varsity Soccer (Boys) has had one scrimmage and will begin their season next week in games at Mt. Carmel and Shamokin, with their home opener on September 13. Varsity Soccer (Girls) has scrimmages this Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m,, then their first league games will be away at Southern Columbia and Warrior Run, before their home opener on September 10 versus Bloomsburg.

Also preparing for fall contests are students in Tennis, Softball, Golf, and Cross Country, as well as the Cheerleaders and the Spartan Marching Band. Please check the school website or pick up one of the athletic schedules so that you can mark your calendars and have a great time cheering for your Spartans!

The Sullivan County Council on the Arts presents the “Ultimate Music Theater Weekend.” Beginning on Friday evening with Celtic Rhythms, you will enjoy Blues, Swing, and Vaudeville, all presented at St. Basil’s Hall in Dushore. This is a great opportunity to hear and see some great entertainment and enjoy a drive up the mountain in Pennsylvania’s scenic heart.

Watch for those bright yellow school busses, and please remember to stop (both directions) anytime the flashing lights and STOP signs are activated. Let’s keep all our children safe as they travel to and from school.
