Hughesville Locals Feb. 1, 2017
Welcome to February! What do you think the groundhog will have to “say” tomorrow? If the past month has been any indication of the weeks to come, we don’t seem to have much to worry about as far as “winter” is concerned. That said, I have looked at some long-range forecasts that indicate that, as usual, February might be when we actually see some winter. That’s okay with me, since I would rather not have a false sense of the approach of spring. Knowing that we cannot count on truly nice weather until sometime after the equinox, I prefer to have the seasons behave as we traditionally expect. I still have several indoor projects that I want to complete before it’s time to get busy outside!
When you are preparing to travel, checking the weather and road conditions before you start is a good idea, especially during this season. Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 miles of Pennsylvania roads by visiting the website www.511PA.com. This free, 24 hour service provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, and general travel conditions. You will save yourself time and aggravation if you know what to expect along your planned route.
The persistent cloud cover, coupled with the cold nighttime temperatures, have made it hard to do any star gazing lately, but one astrological event that doesn’t require exposure to the elements is the Chinese New Year. This ancient calendar, a combination of lunar and solar cycles, begins with the new moon that occurs in mid-winter, so this year began last Saturday, January 28 in the Gregorian calendar. This is the Year of the Rooster, a being that represents punctuality and timeliness, and also the exorcising of evil spirits. It seems very apropos for this year.
