Hughesville Locals Mar. 1, 2017

By Staff | Mar 1, 2017

March has arrived, and the recent weather patterns are truly “unsettled”! While I don’t think there will be a ferocious “lion” for the beginning of the month, I do not expect that we will see an orderly transition to Spring. The buds and sprouting bulbs in my yard would like to see a continuation of the recent warm temperatures, but I am confident that despite the overall warming trend we will still have some spells of freezing temps that will play havoc with crops like apples and other early blossoms. A cool March would do a lot towards helping us enjoy a nice fall harvest.

Hughesville basketball athletes have been demonstrating a lot of talent and it’s been great to see both the boys and girls teams compete in District playoffs. The students and coaches should be congratulated for their teamwork and high level of competitive play this year.

On the wrestling team, despite my flawed information last week, HHS had four wrestlers compete at the District Meet last weekend. In addition to Conner Kepner and Josh Dauberman, Luke Gorg and Braden Stahlnecker showed real “Spartan Pride,” and all four finished in the top six in their weight classes. Luke, Braden, and Josh will advance to Regional competition this coming week. Congratulations!

Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Christian season of Lent. Many local churches will be holding worship services tonight and each Wednesday until Holy Week (April 9 15). Please check with your favorite church for specific times and locations, as I don’t have a complete list.

Saint Patrick’s Day will soon be here so break out your shamrocks and pots of gold! Have a great week.
