This is going to be a busy week. I am a member of two garden clubs, Muncy’s and Hughesville’s, and both need my assistance setting up displays in the horticulture building for the much anticipated 147th annual Lycoming County Fair. In previous years, my husband and I were always away during set up time at the fair, but this year we are not leaving for vacation until after the fair begins. So I will get to see a lot of the behind-the-scenes as the fair comes to life and watch the various displays come together for opening day which is today.

Working with the Muncy Garden Club, I never realized there were so many categories or classes of florals to prepare for judging tomorrow. There are floor exhibits, artistic arrangements of frest cut flowers from our gardens, silk floral displays, individual arrangements, fairy gardens, window boxes, miniatures, table and mantle arrangements. Everyone brings in their flowers and we work together to put up the displays. We also get to check in the individual displays from the entrants. The Hughesville garden club are pros at this having had much experience and success with their floral settings in previous years. I volunteered to organize the table setting for the Muncy Garden Club and was pleased with some of the flowers that were able to withstand the cut for more than a day such as the lavender, daisies, catnip and the butterfly bush. You will have to come to the fair to see what we put together! The rain has done us well

Some hot humid temperatures are in the horizon and Red Cross suggests we take some precautions against heat stroke and too much exposure to direct sunlight which can increase the heat index by as much as 15 degrees F. This is what we feel when both high temperatures are combined with high humidity. They advise to check on family members, especially the elderly and pets. Heat stroke can be life threatening so it is important to call 911 if you see signs of hot, red skin which may be dry or moist or changes in consciousness. Move to a cooler place as soon as possible and apply ice packs to wrists, ankles, groin, neck and armpits.

Mon. July 17 the History Buffs group will meet at the Brass Pelican in Sullivan County at 9 a.m. for a program on World’s End State Park with Bill Kocher. The public is welcome.

Thurs. July 18 the MPBA will hold their annual summer mixer at Pennsylvania Chop House, 3146 Quaker Church Rd., Muncy, 6-9 p.m. New businesses are always welcome to join.

Mon. July 24 Special Veterans Assistance Hours with free assistance at Penn Hills Plaza, Suite 1, Muncy. Dan Falls, department service officer with the Pennsylvania American Legion, will be available by appointment on Monday, July 24, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., to help with issues such as compensation, pension, death benefits, education, health care and general veterans’ benefits. Tues. July 25 the Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village will host an introductory class on chair yoga at 1 p.m. in The Village Common.

Dawn Shawley, a certified yoga educator from the new Miller Center for Recreation & Wellness, will provide instruction on gentle chair yoga and the potential benefits of yoga as well as practice movements. The class will be accessible to everyone, offering seated, standing and balance postures, along with breathing practices and short meditation. The SVQG’s July meeting date was changed to Fri. July 28 due to Vacation Bible school activities at the Pennsdale United Methodist Church. Please be sure to make the change on your calendar.
