Muncy Locals July 19, 2017
The Lycoming County Fair Association’s website has a link to its history which took me back to its origins in 1868 with the Muncy Valley Farmer’s Club. This organization had their first agricultural exhibit in 1870 on the southern end of the Hughesville borough. They would exhibit livestock, grains, produce, canned goods and handiwork. What really caught my interest was that there was a newspaper published that started in 1873 called the “Canusarago Daily Herald” and this newspaper became the main feature of the annual exhibit. It was the first newspaper to be published in Hughesville and six issues would cost $25 for a year’s subscription. It was printed during the six days of the exhibition. Now that seems quite high for those times, but it would post all the news and happenings, programs and activities plus the premium winners of the exhibit.
Another interesting fact was that an airport, or rather an airplane landing field, was constructed at the fairgrounds. On May 14, 1929, Amelia Earhart made an emergency landing in her plane at the landing field on the Hughesville Fairgrounds. They said she was lost and intended to land in Bellefonte, but noticed the landing field in the middle of the fairgrounds. Known as the Hughesville Airport, it became an important refueling stop between New York City and Cleveland.
This fair is now a county tradition, bringing in families, friends and some exciting entertainment. Don’t miss this year’s Lycoming County Fair Motorsports tomorrow featuring a kid’s power wheels derby, and Saturday’s truck pull.
