Muncy Locals Oct. 4, 2017
October has rolled around quite quickly, and with it all the festivals and two big monthly awareness campaigns – that is for breast cancer and domestic violence – so expect to see lots of pink and purple. Muncy Restoration Works will be donating ten percent of their labor costs this month to the Cleveland Clinic breast cancer vaccine fund. The vaccine has been successfully tested and the clinic is working hard to take it to human trials. For more information go to www.BrakesforBreasts.org.This will be their 6th year that Muncy Restoration Works has campaigned for “Put the Brakes on Breast Cancer.”
The Muncy Public Library has started a group of like-minded individuals who are interested in the health and wellness of growing and preserving natural foods, especially those we can grow in our backyards. Last month the master gardeners presented a topic on “Putting Your Garden to Bed” and next Monday there will be a discussion on “Everything Garlic” a timely element to one of our best known immune boosters. Come and learn how to grow it and maybe share some recipes. Call the library to sign up or stop by to get more information.
My husband and I attended the Bloomsburg Fair last Tuesday. The temperature read 96 degrees and for the first time fairgoers were welcomed by watering stations where mists of water were blasted through large fans so you could get cooled off temporarily. We were at the fair for six hours and tried out some new treats such as fried key lime pie, red velvet cheesecake balls and always our favorite, Grotto’s pizza. I watched the judging of the cupcake wars and was too tempted to grab one of them and devour them as they looked so good. They were made by middle school students in Columbia and Montour Counties, and in the Education building, the delicacies were judged on appearance, taste and creativity. Before leaving, this year I purchased some Gold Canyon candles, a small leather handbag, some pottery, sunglasses, and a tiara for my granddaughter. It was reported that over 400,000 people attended the Bloomsburg Fair this year, hitting a record year.
