Muncy Locals Mar. 14, 2018

By Staff | Mar 14, 2018

Today Wednesday, March 14, is Pi Day. It is the celebration of the mathematical constant ? (pi), and officially observed on this date because of the first three digits of the numerical value pi. 3/14 is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.

Congratulations to Isaac Harris from Muncy School. He was one of the top ranking middle school students under the leadership of Beth Baker in the Stock Market Competition last week. Also congratulations to Jeremy Lloyd for being chosen as student of the 2nd Quarter at the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce and the Education Committee.

I just loved my Saturday morning. It was so much fun to watch the SuperStars perform in their Beat-A-Thon at the East Lycoming YMCA. I was so glad I took my 7 year old granddaughter who is autistic. Diana Logan and her volunteers welcomed Ari with open arms and asked her to join in the drumming class. They introduced each participant, not all are children, some are adults and all have a disability of some sort. But everyone, parents and the SuperStars, were happy during the event. You couldn’t help it. The smiles were contagious. Representative Garth Everett and his family were there for support and joined in the fun, drumming and dancing. This program is the only one of its kind in the county, and perhaps even further than that. It is free to the community, and of course, donations are accepted. It is offered to the public every Saturday morning in the gymnasium at the ELYMCA. Participants get to learn new skills and build some inner strength as well.

Some of these SuperStars recently starred in Beauty and The Beast at the Community Theatre League in downtown Williamsport. It is another worthy project for kids with disabilities, known as the Penguin Project. It allows them to be able to perform live on stage. Cindy Murphy from Muncy and her family were instrumental in making this event happen. They did a lot of the stage and set design. Bridget Murphy was the stage manager and she worked directly with the mentors and actors. Last year they performed Aladdin and next year they announced “The Jungle Book” for the first weekend in March. To get them ready, the kids will be taking two weeks of theatre camp in the summer.

Finally, a reminder to eat at Hoss’s on Thursday, March 22 to support Meagan’s Box Foundation so Meagan Murray and her family can buy toys for children at Christmas time.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day – drink a green smoothie filled with fresh fruit on Saturday.
