April is here, and already Mother Nature is toying with us! Sunday was not only Easter, but also April Fool’s Day, and the weather certainly got into the spirit. It was surreal to check the weather app on my phone and see that while it was 55 F and sunny, we were under a “Winter Weather Advisory!” When we Pennsylvanians see these wild swings, we know that Spring is truly beginning. I refuse to speculate about when we will see truly settled, warm weather.
Congratulations to the cast, crew, and staff of the Hughesville High School production of “Beauty and the Beast” for a truly magical performance! I really enjoyed myself watching the show and marveled once again at the wide range of talent right here at home. Thank you to all.
Congratulations to Trevor Gagliano of Hughesville and Penn College for competing in the annual National Collegiate Landscape Competition recently held in Graham, North Carolina. He was among nine other students who journeyed to the event that is co-sponsored by the National Association of Landscape Professionals. Trevor is enrolled in landscape and horticulture technology with an emphasis in landscape.
Elementary and high school students will demonstrate a different type of skill this coming Saturday when they take part in the annual Battle of the Books reading competition. Students read a minimum number of books from a list (geared toward their age or grade level), then their team is quizzed about those books Good luck to all our competitive readers
For Christians worldwide, April is the Easter season, a period of eight weeks leading to Pentecost. In that spirit, I offer the words of a favorite hymn, “There is a Green Hill Far Away” by Cecil Frances Alexander, 1818-1895
There is a green hill far away,
Outside a city wall,
Where the dear Lord was crucified,
Who died to save us all.
We may not know, we cannot tell,
What pains He had to bear,
But we believe it was for us
He hung and suffered there.
He died that we might be forgiven,
He died to make us good,
That we might go at last to heaven,
Saved by His precious blood.
There was no other good enough
To pay the price of sin.
He only could unlock the gate
Of heaven and let us in.
Oh, dearly, dearly has he loved!
And we must love Him, too,
And trust in His redeeming blood,
And try His works to do.
