Montgomery Locals May 16, 2018

By Staff | May 16, 2018

The Montgomery Area Historical Society is about to hold one of the year’s most anticipated local events an Open House of the Stone Church on Sunday, May 20th from 1-4 p.m.

The Stone Church is located on the grounds of the Allenwood Federal Prison so opportunities to tour the old church only happen twice a year through the efforts of the Historical Society. The Stone Church is the last surviving original structure of the more than 800 acres of White Deer Valley that were taken by government in 1942 to build a TNT plant. It was the site of the meeting where it was announced that the land would be taken, and where Pulitzer-prize winning author Conrad Richter spent part of his teen years when his father served as the minister.

The church can be accessed at the White Deer Golf Course entrance and signs will be set up. The cemeteries will be open and maps will be available. There will be two short history talks presented at 2 and 3 p.m. Paul Metzger will be on hand to share his genealogy expertise. There will be exhibits to show life in the valley before it was taken over. The event is free and open to the public.
