Montgomery observed Memorial Day with its traditional parade and service in the park. Much of the service was led by Glenn Crossley. His opening remarks shed light on the history of Memorial Day observances in the United States as well as in Montgomery. Two prayers were led by the American Legion Chaplain Gary Adams. Mayor Bob Hoover read a poem, and the Legion presented three awards to school students. Coleen Johns, President of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary awarded Sarah Turner the Eighth Grade Girls Award, and the winner of the American Essay Contest, was sophomore Katelyn Young. Katelyn read her essay, and after she finished Coleen Johns made a surprise announcement that the essay was promoted to the Legion’s District Level where it won second place honors. The Eighth Grade Boys Award was presented by Glenn Crossley to Bradyn Foresman.

Crossley spoke about the 1.1 million servicemen and women who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. Wreaths were laid at the Memorial Stone, followed by a gun salute by the American Legion. Taps was played by two members of the high school band. Devon Neidig played the bugle, and the echo was played by Rachel Strouse. The high school band played the National Anthem, and the ceremony closed with prayer. Once the service formally ended, the high school band played some traditional military and patriotic songs.

It was a solemn ceremony conducted with great honor and appreciation.

Fri. June 1 Teen Game Night will be held at the Montgomery Area Public Library at 4:30 p.m.

Sat. June 2 The Black Hole Creek Fishin’ Derby will be held at the Bower Street Bridge at 9 a.m. for children ages 12 and under.

Sun. June 3 Tina Tickle will be teaching an Abstract Art Fluid Painting class from 1-4 p.m. at the Riverside Campground Deck. All materials are included in the fee.

Sun. June 3 Montgomery Area Little League will have sign-ups for fall baseball at the Brady Township Building from 6-8 p.m.

Weds. June 6 The library will old Toddler Tales from 11-noon for ages 1-5. Children will enjoy a story, snack, and make shaker eggs. Pre-register at at 547-6212 and plan to accompany your child.

Thurs. June 7 There will be a Bible Study in Montgomery Park at 6:15. It will be held in the grass by the batting cages near the Riverside Campground. Bring your own lawn chair. The group is led by Mark Hull and the public is welcome to attend.

Fri. June 8 A group called Rocking Rollers will be starting at the library for children ages 7-11. The theme will be “All About Me Drums”. Please pre-register at 547-6212.

Sat. June 9 The Montgomery Area Historical Society will have the Adam Room open from 10 -1.
