Hughesville Locals July 25, 2018
As the rain moved in to blanket our area on Saturday, I realized that it would be best if I refrain from making any statements about upcoming weather patterns. After my comments were published last week, Mother Nature decided to make her very changeable nature apparent, wiping out all the careful consideration that had been given to my forecast. While there were many days of good conditions for the Lycoming County Fair, the last day was rather washed out. Even the final grandstand event, the 4 x 4 Truck Pull, had to be postponed due to the constant downpour and muddy track conditions. I understand that the event has been re-scheduled for August 3. Watch for official notification of that date.
It’s that time of the summer when local churches are holding Bible School. Missed in my listing last week was a weeklong session of fun and learning that is taking place at Trinity Lutheran Church. Originally planned for The Beacon United Methodist (formerly Christ U.M. Church), final stages of renovation and floor refinishing made a place change necessary, so school-age children are engaging in experiencing “Babylon” at Trinity. Complete with a marketplace where ancient crafts and foods are explored, the children, and their leaders, are gaining new understandings of Old Testament times and of the Bible. Next week, Hughesville Friends Church will hold its annual soccer-themed Bible camp at its church grounds on Third Street.
While evening skies often have clouds and sometimes flashes of lightning, when the sky is clear, take some time to enjoy the spectacle of the bright planets that arc across the dome. Venus is especially brilliant in the west, and Jupiter, Saturn, and now Mars stand out brighter than any star. I find it amazing that we can stand outdoors and view these distant worlds and also enjoy the backdrop of the thousands of other celestial objects. What an astounding creation is our universe!
