Muncy Locals July 25, 2018

By Staff | Jul 25, 2018

The fair is over and that is my signal that back to school is nearing. Store shelves are stocked and it seems summer has just started.

Some garden crops are ready to be harvested. I have garlic ready to eat and store for the winter, and zucchinni is ripe now. Pennsylvania has a special website for marketing vegetables and putting together nutritious recipes. Just go to PAVeggies.org for tips and recipe videos, food directories, a handy vegetable guide, a farmer’s toolkit and blogs on farm life. There also is a local harvest website www.localharvest.org that is very valuable as well, and features specialty growers and markets.

Keep an eye out for the pollinators. We see many wildflowers growing this year, and they are the best plants for the bees and butterflies. I was in awe by the enormous amounts of them growing along the fence of the Rails to Trails as I was riding my bicycle last week during the gorgeous weather we had. There was goldenrod, aster, clover, black-eyed Susan, phlox, queen Anne’s lace and many I did not know.

The American Red Cross Central Pennsylvania Region has expanded its coverage area and has changed its name and Twitter handle. The newly-named American Red Cross Greater Pennsylvania Region can be followed at @RedCrossGPA. By the end of this month all news and disaster response updates will be posted at @RedCrossGPA.

Congratulations to Meredith McCahan of Muncy for going to Akron, Ohio for the national Soapbox Derby. Meredith who is 12 years old, was a final winner in the local superstock division which took her to nationals this week.

More congratulations go to students, Rory Oden and Breanna King, who both won fourth place in the FBLA nationals for Muncy. They even mentioned the Muncy Luminary in their winning presentation.
