Hughesville Locals Aug. 29, 2018

By Staff | Aug 31, 2018

Summer isn’t over, weather-wise, and this week is bringing us a heat wave. Tomatoes are ripening quickly in my garden, along with all the other produce, which means more time over pans of boiling water for me. I grumble about being over-heated while canning, but I do love having all that “sunshine in a jar” during the cold winter months. Thank goodness for air conditioners!

School is well underway and the HHS fall sports teams, cheerleaders, and band have all begun their competitive/performance schedules. Be sure to get your copy of the schedule and grab your stadium seat or folding chair so you can enjoy some great athletic contests. There are also some football, soccer, and softball teams for elementary-aged children that are playing, so you have a choice of age-levels to watch. It’s wonderful that our community has the facilities, and the willing coaches and staff so that these opportunities can be offered to our youth. Of course, if you’d like to help out, volunteers are always needed and welcome, so don’t hesitate to inquire with the schools or team staff about their specific needs.

Did you know that NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) has a website for its Space Weather Prediction Center? This site shows the current conditions in space related to Geomagnetic Storms, Solar Radiation Storm Impacts, and Radio Blackout Impacts, all of which relate to solar flares and other fluctuations of energy that can affect communications and electronic systems across the globe. It’s an interesting resource of which I have recently been made aware. Check it out at www.swpc.noaa.gov.

As we celebrate Labor Day on Monday, we know that autumn is approaching and with it will come the many festivals and harvest celebrations. Get your calendar prepared so you won’t miss your favorites!
