Hughesville Locals Sept. 27, 2018

By Staff | Sep 28, 2018

Autumn is here, and many of us are sighing in relief that the hot, humid weather seems to be a thing of the past. I know that we could still have some very warm days, but the cool down at night is refreshing, and the early daytime temperatures have brought out the jackets and sweaters that many of us put aside a few months ago.

The Bloomsburg Fair is taking place this week and many local folks are exhibiting items there. It’s always a good time when we make a visit to see the displays, particularly some of the farm produce like the largest pumpkins and squash! Some years they have also had oxen visiting and I was amazed at the enormous size, but gentle disposition of those “beasts of burden.” There are still a few days left for the fair, so take the opportunity to visit one of our area’s best attractions.

I have recently noticed that there are several communities in the area that are holding “October Fest” celebrations. Locally, the Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department will hold theirs on Saturday, October 6. This long-standing German tradition is a harvest celebration and activity where one can enjoy family and friends before the onset of winter. Whether or not you enjoy beer, a common feature of OctoberFest, there will be many things to do and enjoy at HVFD, I’m sure.
