Hughesville Locals Feb. 20, 2019

By Staff | Feb 21, 2019

Well, that last storm was a bit of a mess, wasn’t it? The snow wouldn’t have been a big deal, but the ice that formed on top of it made sidewalks and parking lots treacherous. And, unfortunately, there are a number of property owners in the borough who have either decided to eliminate sidewalks along their street frontage, or ignore the frozen mess that forms on the sidewalks they have. Walking in the street is no picnic when the road salt has turned everything to varying degrees of frozen slush. Please, let’s step up and make it possible for pedestrians, of whatever age, to safely make their way around town.

It’s that time of the school year when student athletes and musicians are competing at advanced levels. Among those moving on to regional and/or state level competitions are Chorus students Eric Karschner and Benjamin McGovern, who will be auditioning this week for chairs at the PMEA State Chorus event in April. Congratulations to both of them! Wrestlers have completed the Sectional tournament and the boys and girls basketball teams will be in playoff games this week. And, although the winter athletes have not yet ended their seasons, I saw some baseball players holding some early training sessions! You know spring is just around the corner when you hear the “crack of the bat”!

Another sign of spring is those hardy daffodils poking their green tips up through the snow. My neighbor always has the earliest ones, and they are already several inches tall, with buds formed at the tops. Her house has a nice southern exposure and the plants at that end are well protected from cold wind and the worst blasts of storms, so I have given up hope of equaling her success, just enjoy seeing them from my place!
