As you are enjoying those Girl Scout cookies, and as we leave Women’s Hisory Month, keep in mind a notable woman who was highly involved with the Girl Scouts of America. Lou Henry Hoover was the 33rd First Lady of the United States and served as National Commissioner for Girl Scouts as well as VP, President and Chairperson for the Board of Directors. While serving as President in 1922 for the GS, Hoover helped to create a program selling cookies to teach the girls entrepreneurship. The original recipe from that year was given to the Girl Scouts so they could make their own cookies at home and sell for 20 to 30 cents a dozen. So remember those early beginnings as you purchase your next box of girl scouts.

The Master Gardeners have advised me that this week is a good time to start plants from seeds, so I decided to try with some lettuce seeds by using some plastic food containers with lids to give them a solar effect. Once they’re sprouted they can be moved to direct sunlight, then eventually outdoors. Be sure to check out their new calendar. There are some great programs coming up – one I find of particular interest is the Herbs & Plants of the Civil War coming up April 6.

A visit to the Meck Senior Center shared a weekly schedule filled with activities. Holidays are celebrated with festivity and so are birthdays. Next Wednesday, they will have a birthday party at noon for those celebrating birthdays in April. On Monday mornings there are crafts, Tuesdays and Thursdays are bingo, Wednesdays are for cards and there is a card party the last Friday night of every month. Thursday mornings a Bible study is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.

More progress is taking place at the UPMC Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Construction on the second floor recently was completed with shower room renovations that are more spacious for the residents and staff. They said everything is more functional and in the late summer or early fall renovations will be made on the first floor. They do have wonderful activities there for the residents such as jewelry making and a Celtic harpist visited last week with beautiful music

Lent is here and many of the churches are having services, dinners, retreats and fundraisers. Check listings to see what you might like to support – lots of food choices from Easter eggs to soup bowls, fish fries, and more.
