Hughesville Locals May 29, 2019
While the astronomical first day of summer is still three weeks away, most of us feel like it has arrived with the Memorial Day holiday. The burst of blooming and leafing of trees, shrubs, and garden plants, as well as the hum of lawn mowers and trimmers, combine to make me want to spend as much time as possible outdoors. At the very least, I don’t like to be in any room that doesn’t have a window open to the birdsong and breezes. I am grateful that the recent violent weather that has ravaged parts of Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and other states, has broken up and dissipated before reaching our area. I remember that our elementary teachers taught us that “our hills protect us from tornadoes” and I hope that will always hold true.
Graduation exercises are taking place in schools throughout the area and Hughesville High School will confer diplomas on the Class of 2019 on Tuesday evening. Best of luck and best wishes to all the graduates as they begin the next adventure in their lives! I have been privileged to get to know many of these young people and expect to hear great things about them in the years to come.
It’s also time for the annual Firemen’s Carnival and all the rides, food, and parades that mark this traditional event. Please be sure to plan for a few visits to the carnival and help fill the financial coffers for this dedicated group of volunteers who provide such fine service for our community.
Traffic re-alignment and street-paving projects are progressing in the borough, and I noticed that at least one fire hydrant, at the corner of Academy and Broad Streets, has been replaced. This type of improvement does a lot to enhance our town and I appreciate the borough crews and council who make it all happen.
Have a great beginning to the summer season!
