Montgomery Locals July 31, 2019
The First United Methodist Church on Houston Avenue is preparing for their Backpack and School Supply giveaway, which will be happening on Sunday, August 18, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. (or while supplies last). The event is the week before Montgomery’s first day of school on Monday, August 26.
The Backpack Giveaway has been happening for eight years, and in 2016 the church began providing a generous variety of new school supplies as well. The church members give backpacks and supplies and gladly accept donations from anyone who wishes to participate in giving. The church opens their doors to any student in the community who needs a new backpack and school supplies. Students are welcome to choose their own brand-new backpack and then fill it with their choice of school supplies. The variety of options, from supplies to the styles of backpacks, are meant to appeal to the tastes and academic needs of children in elementary school to teenagers in high school.
In addition to accepting donations from the members of the congregation and townsfolk, the church has been doing hoagie sales to raise funds for the needed items.
If you would like to donate anything to the giveaway, please contact the church at (570) 547-6948.
