Even though the 149th annual Lycoming County fair has come and gone, I still bask in the glorious gold-plated reflection of a trophy-my only first place award, ever-which graces my desk at the Luminary office. (Humor me while I share my perspective of that shining moment).
As a Luminary representative, I arrived a few minutes late to the inaugural Women’s Frying Pan Throwing Contest on July 19. I visited the registration table behind the Larrabee building to take a gander at the names of area women who were waiting for the event to begin. Entries were sparse by the time 6 p.m. rolled around, and emcee Matt Eyer resorted to begging any woman who happened to wander past the contest tent site to join the competition.?He turned his attention to me and began baiting me with an invitation to enter, explaining that registration was free, and prizes would be awarded in all four categories. ?”And there’s a $25 overall award,” Eyer enticed. Little did Eyer know, he had my attention at the word “prizes.”?’Ah, what the heck,’ I thought, and found myself scribbling my information on the registration sheet, joining a handful of contestants in my age category. ?Apparently, in frying pan throwing contests, the rules are basic, which Eyer reviewed with the contestants prior to the first throw.?Regulations are as follows:
Pan was provided by contest sponsors Winder Trucking and Excavating, and the Local Dairy
Barn, both of Hughesville
Open to all women ages 18 and up
One throw per contestant
No gloves or hand grips allowed
No practice throws
Throw must be straight out the course
Throw is one-handed and underhand
Crossing the foul line will result in disqualification
Finalists from each age group will compete to determine overall winner. Each finalist will have two throws and the best of two is taken.
After snapping a few photographs, my interest as a spectator waned and the competitive side began to override my journalistic duties. My camera was tucked away and secured safely with innocent bystander Mike Bieber as I waited for Eyer to announce my turn. ?It was then that I noticed the awards which awaited the winners-ribbons and trophies. Overcome by the prize (or perhaps it was the high heat warning), I understood what had to be done, and not ashamed to say first place became mine in the 46-60 age category with a toss of 26 feet, 3 inches.?Heather Holmes, competing in the 18-29 division garnered overall winner status with an astounding 46 foot throw in the final elimination. ?Rachel Gardner, of Unityville, earned first place in 30-45 division, while Jeanette Schriner, of Unityville, claimed top spot in the 61 and older category.
It’s a safe bet to say that the contest will return next year; ladies, start practicing now!
