Hughesville Local column for September 18, 2019?

By Staff | Sep 18, 2019

Autumn festivals are a favorite activity, especially on those days when the sun is shining, but not blazing hot, and the air is crisp and cool, but still comfortable. The autumnal equinox is Monday, so I think the hot summer days are gone and we can count on good old fall weather. I am ready for the season to officially begin, and it won’t take me long to locate my jackets and check my supply of warm socks.?

A hundred years ago William Butler Yeats, the poet, wrote:

“The trees are in their autumn beauty,?The woodland paths are dry,?Under the October twilight the water?Mirrors a still sky. . .”?

The first lines of his poem, titled “The Wild Swans at Coole,” make me think that he must have lived in a place much like our central Pennsylvania. I do hope I spend several days on some dry woodland paths as this glorious season unfolds. There are many choices of things to keep us busy, including just a quiet afternoon on a porch swing with a good book, so I’m hoping for a long, mild autumn.?
