Muncy Locals Oct. 2, 2019

By Staff | Oct 2, 2019

Former Muncy resident Wayne Parfitt, living in Newport News Virginia for the last 16 years, recently learned some fairly impressive news. Back in the day, Wayne set a few records in cross country track while attending the Williamsport Area Community College, now known as Pennsylvania College of Technology. Most notable was Parfitt’s fastest marathon in the U.S. for anyone 19 or younger in 1984 (2:31:09); several years ago, Penn College named him “Outstanding Varsity Athletic Alumni Award for winning the PA state championship in cross country.”

But that’s old news. Wayne set aside his running shoes for nearly three decades before slipping them on again, and is making strides once more. Based on the Abbot World Major Marathons, Wayne is ranked eighth in the nation and 44th in the world for his age group. The ranking is based on running times in both the Chicago and Boston Marathon. Wayne is married to the former Sunday Dorsett, daughter of the late Donald Dorsett and Joyce Dorsett, who survives. Attaboy, Wayne!

Walking is such a therapeutic exercise and plenty of events to encourage it are scheduled this month, taking opportunity to witness fall foliage. Tails on the Trail, a 2-mile nature walk with or without your dog in the hills of Pennsdale is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 13. The event is hosted by Trinity Farm, 748 Quaker Church Road. Registration begins at noon and the walk begins at 12:30 p.m. Afterwards, enjoy food, vendors, music and hayrides. There is an entry fee, register at www.lycomingspca.org/tailsonthetrail.

Additionally, the annual Monster Dash is Saturday, Oct. 26, 9:30 a.m., beginning at Ward L. Myers Elementary School. There is a registration cost.

And, if you want to walk without a monetary cost involved, feel free to join a Facebook group known as “Muncy Walks,” a group that launched last June. Banding together to challenge and keep each other accountable, the group meets weekly-typically a Sunday afternoon-at a different designated spot to walk. The location is announced on their Facebook page a week beforehand. All are welcome to participate.
